How important is water for humans to be
related how much attention pays by us.
Only 2.5% of Earth's water is freshwater
and just 0.3% of it is easy accessible for humans. If this quantity of readily
accessible freshwater, 8% goes for domestic use, 22% is used by industry, and
other 70% for agriculture and irrigation. Recently years, water scarcity
becomes even more common and getting worse. It is time to consider about this
life issue.
Start from the textiles (fashion) industry,
we would like to take "cotton" to be an example in this case. Because
cotton accounts for 90% of all natural fibers used in the textile industry, it
is used in 40% of all apparel produced, with synthetics accounting for 55%
globally.
From growing process, its farming is
consumed a huge amount of water compared with other natural fibers' those. Not
only consume water, but also the pesticides and herbicides occupied for 10% of
all agricultural chemicals and 25% of all pesticides used worldwide per year.
It leads to pollute groundwater and soil at the same time.
Generally,
cotton production accounts for 2.6% of global water usage annually. A T-shirt
requires 2700 liters of water, and a third of pound of chemicals to make. Some
72 toxic chemicals through water supply from textile dyeing, rinsing, and
treatment used large amounts of freshwater. Many chemicals can't be filtered or removed
before discharging and then some waste water is released back freshwater
resource. These chemicals cause environmental and human damages and also
biological changes in our aquatic system. The World Bank estimates that around
20% of global industrial water pollution comes from textiles production.
In
other hand, water pollution is not only lead to factories. But also washing
clothes at home is big part. 40% of domestic water is from laundry, especially
by hand washing in the developing countries. There is also a problem from
laundry detergents to cause water pollution.
